Singapore Business Directories: We Tested 21 for Backlinks
Singapore business directories tested in Aug and Oct 2026: of 21, only 5 pass a followed link and just 1 is free. See the full table before you submit.
Search for Singapore business directories and you get list after list promising hundreds of free dofollow backlinks. We wanted to know how many of those listings really pass a followed link, so we opened live listings on 21 directories, chambers, review platforms and partner pages and read the HTML ourselves - first on 15 August 2026, then re-checking 17 of the 21 on 1 October 2026. The answer: five carried a followed link to the business's own website on the last date we read them, and only one of the five is free. This is the check we run before any directory goes into a link plan for our SEO services in Singapore, and the full table is below.
The short version: Of 21 directories tested, 5 pass a followed link (1 free, 2 behind a chamber membership, 2 behind partner status), 7 are nofollow, 2 are inconsistent, 4 gave no website link on the listings we read and 3 could not be reached on either date. On one directory the listing we read in August was followed; all four we read in October were nofollow.
What Singapore business directories are good for - and what they are not
A directory listing can do two different jobs, and most "free backlink" lists blur them together.
- Job one - the citation. Your business name, address and phone number, published consistently on sites people and search engines already trust. This supports map visibility and is the groundwork of local SEO. A listing does this job whether its link is followed or not.
- Job two - the link. A hyperlink to your website that search engines can count as a vote. This only happens when the link carries no
nofollow,ugcorsponsoredvalue in itsrelattribute.
Google's own documentation says links marked with those values "will generally not be followed" (Google Search Central: Qualify your outbound links), and since 2019 it has described them as hints rather than strict rules (Google Search Central Blog). In plain terms: a nofollow listing is a fine citation and an unreliable vote. If a list sells you directory submissions as authority building, job two is what you are paying for - so job two is what we tested.
How we tested
- Open a real listing, not the sales page. For each directory we opened the live profile of a business that is already listed.
- Find the link to that business's own website and read its
relattribute in the page HTML. - Classify it. No
nofollow, ugcorsponsored= followed. Any of the three = nofollow. No link to the business's website anywhere on the profile = no link. - Check the container. A followed link that sits inside an advertising slot is an ad, not a listing link.
- Test twice. First pass 15 August 2026; second pass 1 October 2026 on 17 of the 21. Klaviyo, Yellow Pages Singapore, Agency Vista and Streetdirectory were not re-read and keep their 15 August result. Per directory we read either one to four individual profiles or every agency link on its Singapore list page.
The DR column is Ahrefs Domain Rating as read on 15 August 2026. It is Ahrefs' estimate of a site's link strength, not a Google metric - we include it because it is the number most directory lists sell on.
The results: 21 directories, two test dates

Two more were on our list and could not be tested either time: sgpbusiness.com sat behind a bot-challenge page, and UpCity timed out from our network. We left them out rather than guess.
The five that pass a followed link
SBF and SCCCI: membership directories
Both chambers publish a members' directory that anyone can open without logging in, and on 1 October 2026 the member website links on both carried no nofollow. Neither is an open listing - you get the entry by being a member, so confirm with the chamber that your membership tier appears in the directory. For a company with share capital under S$0.5 million, SBF lists Associate membership at S$327 entrance plus S$327 a year, GST included, with the entrance fee waived for new approved applicants who sign up between January and December 2026 (SBF membership page, read 1 October 2026). SCCCI does not publish its fees alongside the directory, so ask the chamber about fees and eligibility before you plan around it.
The honest framing: join a chamber because the membership is worth it to your business. The link is a by-product, and it only makes sense if you would join anyway.
Agency Spotter: the only free one
Agency Spotter was the only free directory in the test whose "Visit Website" link carried no nofollow on both dates. It is a directory of marketing and creative agencies, so it is only relevant if that is what your business is.
HubSpot and Klaviyo: partner directories
HubSpot's partner profile carried a followed link on 1 October 2026 and Klaviyo's did on 15 August 2026 (not re-read). Both list you only once you qualify for the partner programme. That makes them a result of real client work on those platforms, not a link tactic. If you already qualify, claim the profile. If you do not, there is no shortcut.
What changed in 47 days
We did not expect the second pass to move much. Three rows read differently.
- Hotfrog SG - followed on the listing we read on 15 August; nofollow on four out of four listings on 1 October. It was one of two free followed links in our first pass. Now there is one.
- TopSEOs - every agency link on the Singapore list was nofollow in August. In October, 30 of 42 outbound non-social links were nofollow, while about 11 plain-text agency website addresses carried no rel at all - we cannot say whether that is new or whether our August read missed them.
- Sortlist - no website link on the profile we read in August. In October one profile out of four carried a website link without nofollow; the other three carried none. That may be a wider sample rather than a change.
This is the real problem with directory lists. A site's link treatment can change, or vary from profile to profile, and nobody goes back to edit the list. Treat any list more than a quarter old - including this one - as a starting point for your own check, not as a fact.
High DR, no followed link
Four of the highest-DR names in the table pass no followed link. On the listings we read, Trustpilot (DR 94), Clutch (DR 91), DesignRush (DR 90) and GoodFirms (DR 86) all marked the link to the business's website nofollow. Clutch goes further and routes the click through its own redirect. On Clutch's Singapore SEO list the sponsored placements were marked nofollow sponsored; on DesignRush every agency link we read on the Singapore list was nofollow.
That does not make these profiles useless. Buyers do research agencies and vendors on them, reviews there can be read by anyone, and a complete profile is a sales asset. It makes them the wrong line in a backlink budget. If someone quotes you for a "featured" or "verified" placement as an SEO investment, open a featured listing and read the rel on its link - it will almost always be nofollow or sponsored, as a paid placement should be.
The ad-slot trap
An earlier reading of Streetdirectory marked it as followed, and that was wrong. The followed outbound link we had found on a listing page sat inside a block labelled "Report this ad" - an advertising unit, not the business's listing. The free listing itself gave no link to the business's website at all.
The lesson is the reason step four of the method exists: judge a link by the container it sits in, not only by its rel. A scraper that counts followed outbound links per page would have scored that directory as a win.
So are directory listings worth doing?
Yes - as citations, and with the right expectations.
- Keep the name, address and phone number identical everywhere, character for character, including unit number and postal code. Consistency is the whole point of a citation.
- List where people in Singapore really look - your Google Business Profile first (our Google Maps SEO guide covers it), then a short set of general and industry directories.
- Skip unreachable directories. Three of our 21 did not load on either test date.
- Do not pay for a featured tier for SEO reasons. A placement you pay for is advertising, and Google expects paid links to be marked sponsored or nofollow.
- Do not buy bulk directory submissions. Google's spam policies name low-quality directory links as a form of link spam (Google Search Essentials: spam policies).
What moves authority is slower and less convenient: memberships you would hold anyway, partner programmes you have earned, editorial mentions in publications your customers read, and original data other sites want to reference. None of it arrives in a week, which is part of how long SEO takes.
Check a directory yourself in two minutes
- Open the directory and click into a business that is already listed - ideally one on the free plan.
- Right-click its website link and choose Inspect.
- Read the
relattribute on that<a>tag. If it contains nofollow, ugc or sponsored, do not count the listing as a backlink. - Look at the element around the link. If it is an ad unit or a "sponsored" block, it is not what a free listing will get.
- Repeat on two more listings. Some directories treat free and paid profiles differently.
What this test does not tell you
- Small samples. We read one to four profiles, or one list page, per directory. A directory can treat plans, categories or older profiles differently.
- Nofollow is a hint, not a wall. "Not followed" means do not count on the vote. It does not mean the listing has no value.
- DR is not Google's number. It is a third-party estimate, useful for comparing sites and nothing more.
- We did not buy paid tiers. The only paid placements we read were the sponsored entries on Clutch's Singapore SEO list; we did not test what a paid listing receives anywhere else.
- It will go out of date. Three rows read differently 47 days apart. Re-check before you act.
